Butterick Retro 4512 Halter Dress

DSC_8794This dress was an absolute breeze to put together, but a PITB to get on!! I really thought it was me the 1st time i made this pattern, but now this time I realize it is not me and must be the “retro” nature of the dress!

If you are not super skinny, and i mean skinnier than me, than this is not the straight out the envelope pattern for you.

The first time i made, i think the size 4, which is normally my pattern size, this time i made size 12. Now let’s just talk for a moment! The size 4, i just thought okay maybe i gained a little weight, right around the tummy, i mean i do have a 4 yr old, it wouldn’t be unheard of to gain some middle section weight. So i gifted that one to a cousin.

Now this time i actually looked at the finished garment measurements and was highly surprised myself to be cutting out a size 12 anything! but i did and i even did some test fits along the way and everything was going smooth.

okay so i am all finished up, because really this dress is like 4 pieces. I followed the directions word for word this time, only because i felt like i messed up somewhere the last time. But let me tell you how glad i am that i used a stretch poplin that i don’t know what to say!! I had been holding on to this fabric since spring waiting for the right garment to make and then i decided on this!

okay so finally i have installed my zipper and i am ready to determine button placement for the halter back so i strip down to try it on!!

Okay i couldn’t even zip the dang thing up!! i was floored!!! laughing that is!DSC_8799

so the conclusion that i have come to is that this pattern  is for the super skinny or to be used as a guide to draft your own, which is what i am going to do. I absolutely love how the dress flows and i love how it looks on me, with the exception of the low bust points, but i can fix that when i draft my own.

Overall i like the design of the garment, but not the drafting of the pattern.

and again i have not really been in the picture taking mode! taking pics soon after completion of a garment is out of the question! most times i am finishing up late at night or in my pj’s and there is no way i can muster up enough energy to do the makeup / hair thing! then when i am getting fully dressed, face done, hair right, it’s generally in the mornings before work and i just don’t have time to be taking pictures.

I promise i will find a happy medium and put more effort into my PR pics as i do for my auction ones! i mean i did spend the money and the time to learn photography basics may as well use them.

well i know i said this last post but i am hoping the next finished garments will be fall, unless i find some UFO laying around that i just have to finish up!!

Great dress, it looks divine on you. A size 12, no way, I'm staying away from vintage patterns because that would be a big blow to my ego, I would have cut an 18 or bigger, Ouch.
