Halter Infinity Type Dress Explanation

Posted by: K. Elliott Couture on: July 4, 2009

This is NOT a tutorial, because I feel like i am just not ready to start giving out tutorial type information! In my opinion for one to give tutorials on something, it should be tried and true a million times to perfection before you start telling someone how to do something! so with that said, I have made about 6 of these dress and i love them! I do basically do the same steps with each, but i have made several different length, some with lots more flare at the hem and am still experimenting with the width of the bands / straps. So it is not perfect and not a step by step, but more of an explanation of how i arrived at these dresses.

For the very first one i did, i used one of the Wild Ginger modules to draft a halter or tube top. just the top only as i didn’t want any darts. I then took the tube top pattern, with no ease and drew out an A-line skirt, all in one piece from the bottom of the halter down. this is where you can get a bit creative. I have made several lengths from tunic to maxi, i just mark on my pattern where to cut for which length.

Sorry i didn’t think to take pictures of my original pattern. but it’s actually only one piece since you are folding it in half so that you only have two side seams.

Once you have your front and back cut out, I cut 2, 10 inch wide stripes as wide as my fabric. Most of my knits come in somewhere around 54" or above which is plenty long for my slim body. but if you prefer your straps wider or longer now is the time to do that!

I simply fold over my straps and serge. once they are closed on one end, i stabilize the inseam area of my halter dress, about 2 inches down from the top, for at least 6 inches. I do this to give my straps a bit of support because i tie them in various ways. Back to front, around my shoulders, etc.

I then sew the straps into the side seams all in one step.

I then use 1 inch elastic all the way around the top of my halter or tube. DSC_8657

Then choose your favorite method of hemming knit skirts and your done! super easy right?? and they wear so well and are flattering to most figures. If you have some things to hide, just add some ease so that is more flowing!! lol and not so figure hugging.

I used some lingerie elastic to finish mine off, which i just love to do, if only i have a million colors, i would probably do all of them this way, but i have used a lettuce finish and a fold over & coverstitch method as well.

DSC_8682 when i use this lingerie elastic method, do not stretch the elastic!!! you will end up with a hot mess!!!

Now i label this dress as an infinity type because there are endless ways you can tie your straps!!! The original picture i posted with about 5 different dresses shows lots more variations but here are a few.

DSC_8683 each side on this last view is intended to show you one thin and the other to look more like a cap type sleeve!

I  forgot to mention that this fabric is an ITY knit that i purchase online somewhere and absolutely did not purchase enough! I love it!!! I have made this dress and a tunic length top from it and now there is no more to be found in my stash! so sad :-(

so i hope i have explained well enough for you to make one of these for yourself. if not you can email me or post your question in the comments and i will try my best to help you out!

And thanks for all the wonderful compliments from the first photos!
